The deductible is the amount you pay out of your own pocket annually before benefits begin. When choosing a plan, consider that:

• You are responsible for more of your own medical expenses when you pay a higher deductible, so your monthly premiums will be lower.
• Once you meet your annual deductible, benefits begin and last until the end of the year.
• When a new year begins, you must meet the deductible again before benefits start again.

We understand that choosing a deductible can be difficult. Here are some tips that may help:

• Choose a deductible that won’t cause financial hardship for you or your family.
• Remember that the higher the deductible, the lower your premium payment.
• Find your comfort zone by balancing a deductible amount you may have to pay out of pocket with the savings you'll get in monthly premiums.

Besides deductibles, there are other factors you should consider when picking a plan:

• Coinsurance is the percentage of covered hospital, doctor and other health care services that members are responsible for paying themselves. For example, if you have 80 percent coverage and need an X-ray that costs $200, your plan will pay $160 and you will owe $40. There may also be set limits your insurance will pay for certain procedures.
• Don’t mistake coinsurance with a copayment, which is usually a small amount you pay per visit to in-network doctors.
• Plans also include a maximum out-of-pocket cost per year. Once that total is reached, insurance covers 100 percent of your eligible expenses.
